The beginning of the war in Afghanistan

After September 11 the U.S. decided to start a war against terrorism by invading Afghanistan on October 7, 2001. The invasion was carried out with NATO forces and the Northern Alliance with United Nations support

The U.S. president, George Bush, said in a statement made in Treaty Room in the White House: "On my orders, the United States military has begun strikes against al-Qaeda terrorist training camps and military installations of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan"

President Bush made this decision at the refusal of the ruling Taliban regime to surrender Osama bin Laden, who allegedly had taken refuge in that country. The main objective of the mission was to find Osama bin Laden, leader of al Qaeda, and finally overthrow the Taliban.

At the beginning of the invasion the United States and the United Kingdom carried out the bombing campaign and attacks by ground forces provided mainly by the Northern Alliance. The initial attack removed the Taliban from power, but could not finish them.

The main air strike to be held in Kabul, the Afghan capital, and the airport was left isolated. There were also attacks in Kandahar, where he was the home of Taliban supreme leader Mullah Omar and those in the city of Jalalabad. CNN got the exclusive broadcast images of the city of Kabul being bombed all the U.S. broadcasters.
